It’s almost the holiday season and there is a summer of sun, travel and adventure to look forward to. The longer days and extra hours in the sunshine mean that we need to start giving our skin a little bit of TLC at this time of year. This is especially important if you are jetting off to a less cool and cloudy destination than here in the UK.
Packing the right skincare kit can be challenging, because you don’t want to take up too much valuable luggage space, but on the other hand you want to have the right products to protect your skin and make sure that you look your best during your holiday. Here are a few suggestions about which essentials to take with you.
A lightweight daytime moisturiser
For daytime, take a multi-tasking moisturiser that has an SPF factor of at least 20. Look for one that is tinted to the tone of your skin so that you can dispense with extra layers of sunscreen and foundation in hot weather.
This will allow your skin to breathe and keep it from feeling too clogged up with heavy products. It also means that you have fewer bottles to pack.
Under eye cream
The delicate skin around the eyes is particularly sensitive to sun damage, and can be the first to show the signs of ageing. Pack a product with SPF 20 or higher and apply before you go out. As an extra precaution, wear sunglasses when the sun is particularly intense.
If you are prone to irritated puffy eyes when travelling, some soothing gel containing vitamin C will help to calm them.
Makeup remover and cleanser
When we are out and about in warm weather, it’s especially important to cleanse the skin thoroughly each night. Choose a product that is gentle on the skin but also lifts off makeup and excess oil easily.
Some cleansers may require additional help from a toner to remove the last traces of makeup; this is down to personal preference and how much makeup you usually wear. If you are prone to oily skin and breakouts of acne, you might want to include this step to keep your skin looking its best during your holiday.
Body lotion
Apply a good amount of body lotion that is appropriate for your skin type after your shower or bath to keep your skin soft and supple. During the day time, apply additional sunscreen to exposed areas.
Decant everything you can
Another great tip is to buy a set of silicone travel bottles to decant essentials such as shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel into. Buy a pack with different colours so that you can tell at a glance which product it is. Small pots for creams, gels, and hair styling products are also useful.
Many toiletries such as deodorants and toothpastes are available in travel size packaging, but it generally works out cheaper to decant products from larger bottles wherever possible.
