Does The Ice Beauty Hack Really Work?

When researching skincare products online, sooner or later you are bound to come across some beauty hacks which claim to work miracles. No matter how convincing they seem to be, there is usually no telling if the claim originates from a verifiable source, or how well researched it is.

Here’s a look at the popular ice skincare hack, and how seriously we should take it! This summer, one of the beauty tips that has gone viral on social media is using ice to massage your face. Advice includes using frozen vegetables, bags of ice cubes, or old lipstick cases filled with ice as a facial massage tool, in an effort to reduce puffiness.

Facial puffiness is often caused by water retention, which can happen when we are dehydrated, either through not drinking enough fluids, or through alcohol intake. It can also be the result of allergies such as hay fever, or an allergy to a certain type of food or medication.

There are more serious medical causes of facial swelling, and if it is severe or persistent, you should seek medical advice. However, for everyday puffiness which you might notice first thing in the morning, splashing cold or ice water on the face has long been used as a remedy.

It is thought this is because the cold temperatures cause the blood vessels to contract, which reduces blood flow to the area, thus reducing swelling. It also has a temporary numbing effect, so if your face is feeling sore, you may find a cold application soothing. However, it should be said that most of the evidence is anecdotal.

Some people even claim that ice treatments are good for oily skin and acne, because the cold causes the oil-producing pores to close up. However, this is likely to only be a temporary effect, although there are claims that using products with antibacterial properties, such as frozen green tea or aloe vera, can make a difference.

If you are going to give it a go, make sure that you use fresh ice and coverings each time, or you may end up transferring more bacteria to your face. Ensure that you have cleansed your face to remove excess oil and dirt first. Avoid pressing the ice onto your face for more than a minute or two, or you may damage your skin.

Ice treatments are quick, easy, and affordable as a skincare method. However, they are not suitable for people with sensitive skin, or thin skin, because it may cause redness and inflammation. If you suffer from rosacea or broken capillaries, then you should avoid ice, as it is likely to make the problem worse.

It is not recommended that ice treatments should be used in place of any other step in your skincare routine, because there is no scientific evidence to support its lasting benefits. However, many find that it is a refreshing way to start the day.

For more lasting and effective skincare solutions, you may wish to book an appointment with a professional beauty therapist.
