How To Take Care Of Your Skin After Menopause

The menopause usually occurs around the age of 50, when women begin to experience a drop in hormone levels. Women may find that the change in their hormone balance causes them symptoms such as hot flushes, anxiety, brain fog. They may also notice that their skin changes, and requires a different skincare routine.

Here are some tips to help keep your skin looking its best during this time.

For dry skin

Women who have previously had soft and supple complexions may notice that their skin begins to lose some of its elasticity, and it feels dry more easily than it used to. Avoid washing your face with soap or gel or foam cleansers, as these are too harsh for older skin. Instead, swap them for a creamier lotion.

Avoid using water that is very hot. Pat your face dry gently with a soft facecloth, and apply a rich moisturiser to lock in the hydration. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which are proven to be effective moisturisers.

For wrinkles and jowls

As the hormone levels dip after menopause, the skin begins to lose its suppleness. You may notice that your jawline starts to sag, and fine lines and wrinkles appear or become more pronounced, especially around the corners of the eyes, the forehead, and the mouth.

This is because the body produces less collagen, which is the protein that gives skin its youthful plumpness and elasticity. You may want to try using retinoid creams, which boost collagen production and promote a smoother looking complexion.

However, if you have not used them before, test them out on a small patch of skin first, and build up your usage slowly, because some people find they cause irritation.

For pigmentation

You may find that areas of pigmentation, or brown spots and patches on your skin, become more obvious or appear for the first time. Prevent them from getting worse by applying sunblock every time you go outside, even if the weather is cloudy, as these patches are a sign of sun damage. It will also minimise your risk of developing skin cancer.

If the pigmentation still concerns you, you could consider booking an assessment with a dermatologist. They will examine your skin, and recommend a course of treatment. They may suggest a laser light treatment, which is a quick and painless process, where the melanin cells are destroyed via a highly targeted light pulse.

For facial hair

When hormone levels drop, many women notice unwanted hair appearing on their chin, jawline, and above the upper lip. Removing the hair becomes more difficult on older skin, because it is thinner, and more prone to breakages. Methods such as waxing and epilating may not therefore be desirable.

A laser hair removal treatment is a quick and easy process for many women. It can be carried out by a trained skincare specialist at a beauty clinic.
