Our skin works hard for us, and frankly we couldn’t live without it! Yet we often don’t treat it with much care and kindness, while it is busy fighting off pollutants and keeping our innards safely in one place. Here are some simple skincare mistakes that many people make, and how to take matters into hand.
Getting dehydrated
When the skin’s water content is depleted, it takes on a dull appearance, and loses suppleness. You may notice flaky or itchy patches, and the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles when you stretch it. Because dehydrated skin is less able to fend off bacteria and pollution, you may find it becomes red, tight, and irritated.
Not enough water in the skin is bad news for the basic functions, including skin cell turnover. This is the constant process of shedding the outermost layers of dead skin, which is slowed down when the body becomes dehydrated. This can lead to a build-up of dead cells on the surface which can clog pores, and make your complexion look tired.
It’s best to fix dehydration from the inside. Obviously, increasing your water intake will help—it’s recommended that we drink eight glasses of water a day. One of the main culprits for depleting water levels is alcohol. Not only does it make you need the loo more, but it slows down the rehydration process and inhibits the absorption of nutrients.
Not using sunscreen
All dermatologists will tell you that sun exposure is the number one cause of damage to the skin. The sun can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, even on cloudy days. Once these inner layers become damaged, it is more difficult for the skin to produce collagen, which is the protein that helps to maintain skin elasticity.
Once the skin is sun damaged, it can’t repair itself effectively, and it will be more prone to dry patches, wrinkles, and sagging. The sun can also lead to hyperpigmentation, which is when darker patches appear on the skin. They’re sometimes called liver spots, or sunspots, and usually appear on the hands and face.
It’s important to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day throughout the year, and in very bright sunlight, wear sunglasses and a hat as well. Avoid using suntanning beds, as this raises your risk of developing skin cancer, and you will be at risk of prematurely aging your skin.
Cutting corners with your cleansing routine
It can be tempting to drop into bed without washing your face when you are really tired after a long hard day. However, not removing dirt, oils and makeup from your face at night is the fastest way to clogged pores, which can cause blackheads and pimples to flare up.
Using facial wipes might seem like a quick easy option, but they can be harsh and drying, and do not thoroughly remove makeup. Always use a cleanser before bed, and follow it up with toner or micellar water if you have been wearing heavy makeup.
