How To Start Building A Skincare Routine

Skincare does not need to be as complex as it can sometimes feel.

The quest for beautiful skin can be kickstarted with a visit to a skin care professional or a laser skin clinic, particularly if you are after a particular treatment, but keeping your skin beautiful does not have to be overly complicated.

By understanding your body, taking care of your overall health and focusing on essential, proven products, you can give your skin a significant boost.

Here are the first steps to building a new skincare routine.

Know Your Skin

Everyone’s skin care needs are slightly unique and change over time. In general, however, there are five main types of skin, each of which has advantages and particular needs:

  • Dry skin, characterised by red patches, visible lines and skin that can become cracked and scaly,
  • Oily skin, which often has a shiny complexion and an increase in outbreaks of spots, blackheads and blemishes,
  • Normal skin, which is balanced in between and has very few imperfections,
  • Combination skin, where it is dry or normal in some places and oily in others,
  • Sensitive skin, which can sometimes be caused by a reaction to products and is characterised by red, burning itchy skin.

If you know your skin, you can choose products designed for them and set up a skincare goal that helps you know what treatments and products you need.

Remember The Three Pillars

Whilst there are many products out there with targeted goals in mind, a balanced skincare routine can rely on just three pillars:

  • Cleansing and washing your face, which unclogs pores and gets rid of dead cells,
  • Treating, which is moisturising your skin in general and using active ingredients for specific skin issues,
  • Protecting, which includes sunscreens and other products that protect your skin from further damage.

Thinnest To Thickest

Layering has become a bigger talking point in the health and beauty world, but it is very easy to overthink it. All you need to remember as a rule of thumb is to apply your thinnest products first and your thickest products last.

The thicker products seal in the thinner products, helping them work more effectively.
