4 Skincare Tips For 2022

The last couple of years have been challenging for skincare, from the blight of ‘maskne’ to our favourite aesthetic clinics being closed during the lockdown. Many of us have had to adopt new ways to look after our skin during the pandemic, and we wanted to have a look at some skincare essentials for 2022.

There is no shortage of column inches devoted to makeup and skincare routines, whether it’s to say that we’re doing it all wrong, or that we should be using certain new complex-sounding serums or products. But drastically changing your routine can be difficult to maintain, so we have a look at just a few easily achievable tips for better skin in 2022,

  1. Apply sunscreen every day

Regardless of the season or even the weather, sunscreen is a basic, yet effective essential skincare tool. Sunscreen is your number one anti-ageing cream and has consistently shown to have a massive impact in preventing accelerated ageing and skin cancers.

Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF30 or higher, and look for a moisturiser with SPF too. Broad-spectrum means the sunscreen will guard against the harmful effects of UVA rays, which contribute to premature skin ageing, and UVB rays, which cause sunburn.

  1. Don’t sleep in your makeup

Aside from leaving a mess on your pillowcases, sleeping with your makeup on can cause a wide range of skin issues, from clogged pores and breakouts to extreme lip dryness, and it also increases the risk of severe damage to your eyes.

Simply wash your face before bed. You will need the right cleanser for your makeup, for instance, an oil-based concealer will need a solvent-based cleanser. Foaming cleansers usually emulsify most foundations and lipstick. Always take care with cleansers around the sensitive eye area.

  1. Throw away expired or unused products

If you’re planning on a big spring clean, then it’s also a good idea to take a look at your skincare collection. We have all bought products to try, but then not used, forgotten about, or not liked, and it can turn your bathroom shelf into a graveyard of half-filled containers, many of which may have passed their expiry date.

Start by checking the expiration dates on all of your skincare products, and commit to throwing anything away that’s out of date, as well as anything you did not like. You can streamline even further by throwing out similar products – for example, if you have two hyaluronic acid products, you probably don’t need both of them.

  1. Keep your skincare routines simple and consistent

Make this year the year to ditch the complicated multi-step routines, and find a simpler skincare regimen. More is not always better, and the more steps you have, the more it can lead to irritation.

Over-scrubbing, over-exfoliating, and over-applying products are not necessarily any better than sticking to a simple, effective skin-care routine.

A good rule of thumb is to stick to three simple products that will make a difference: sunscreen, a cleanser, and a moisturiser.
