Now spring is with us, the days are getting rapidly lighter and not-so-rapidly warmer, but the chilliest months of winter are at least behind us with, hopefully, some fine summer sun to come.
The changing of the seasons always poses fresh challenges for skincare, but also opportunities. For instance, if you have very fair skin spring will bring the first occasions on which you might suffer sunburn.
At the same time, the fact that your skin will get exposed more as the weather warms up means it’s time to pay more attention to those bits – not just your face – that will see more sun. Therefore, now is definitely time to exfoliate, to shift any dead skin cells and flaky bits that have built up.
This can be done with exfoliating soaps and shower products, or you can use a chemical peel to do a really thorough job on it.
Spring will be the time when your natural oils come into a better balance and your skin will hold more moisture. This is because the autumn and winter bring drier air, not because it rains less (it doesn’t), but because there is less evaporation making the air less humid, while the weather is windier, meaning heat and moisture is blown away from your skin.
Once your skin is exfoliated, it will enjoy a better balance to start with, but going forwards what you will need is a lighter moisturiser, so that you are just adding the little extra you need to keep your skin as moist as it should be, rather than the loads extra you will have been using over the winter months.
For the same reasons, you should wear a bit less make-up. This is to avoid clogging up your pores as your skin moisture increases, but there is also an aesthetic reason too; in winter social events will usually be indoors under artificial light, requiring dressing up and make-up.
By contrast, summer is about lots of daylight and generally adorning yourself with less, with lighter clothing or even a swimsuit if you are down on the beach. Alternatively, you may be active and out walking in the hills, which is certainly not an occasion to reach for the lipstick and eye shadow.
In addition to all that, it’s worth noting that you can give your skin a rest from lots of makeup in between the dates when you will put quite a bit on; after all, it is wedding season so that will happen often.
Should you need any laser work on your skin, spring is also a good time to do it to ensure that the area operated on is not being exposed too much to the strong sun of summer. Come June, the sun will be high in the sky and the hot weather can extend right through August and occasionally into September.
With the right approach to skincare this spring, you can enjoy balanced, glowing skin that will leave you feeling healthy and fresh as we move into the summer months.
