What is the best SPF for you?

Protect your skin 365 days a year

The sun is the main cause of ageing to the skin, which is why it is important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. The most effective way to protect your skin is to use a moisturiser with SPF or a tinted moisturiser every day, come rain or shine. If you want to know more about SPF’s and which one you should purchase that fits in with your skin routine and lifestyle, continue reading.

Tinted SPF

Tinted moisturisers are the ultimate essential for a flawless no-makeup look. Each of AlumierMD’s lightweight Tinted Moisturisers offers a variety of advanced skincare benefits by using a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Tinted moisturisers refresh the skin, leaving it feeling fresh and healthy with a natural radiant glow. They can be used to prep the skin before make-up, in place of a foundation or as an SPF to even out your complexion. Tinted SPF’s can come in various standard shades to suit your skin tone, or the SPF factor is included as a stand-alone ingredient in your foundation, therefore, giving you protection still with the same coverage of make-up you are used to using in your daily routine.

SPF

If tinted moisturisers are the one for you then you should still apply a product that has protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Using an SPF all year round will benefit your skin, helping to reduce premature wrinkles and loss of plumpness. If you don’t like thick or spray-on SPF sunscreens, then look into purchasing a moisturiser that contains SPF properties so your skin can always be properly protected and you and your skin can be happy together. Having a moisturiser with an SPF in it means that you don’t have to have an additional product to apply every morning, you can keep your routine and use a product that both moisturises and protects your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Choose a day-to-day moisturiser that is suitable for your skin type

For combination skin:

If your skin tends to be on the oily side or prone to breakouts, we recommend using synthetic sunscreen, as it has a light texture. Synthetic sunscreens absorb UV rays into the skin and convert them to heat, this is later released from the skin. They need to absorb into the skin to work their best therefore, it is advised that they are applied at least 15 minutes before going outside.

For dry skin:

If your skin tends to be drier or is sensitive, mineral sun filters are more suitable for your skin’s needs. Mineral sun filters are made with natural ingredients and they sit on the skin’s surface, reflecting UV radiation. These products work from the moment they are applied.

SPF Factors

SPF factors are important and you need to pay attention and follow the rules on how to apply them. Applying SPF shouldn’t be used alone. Wearing appropriate clothing and covering up during the hottest times of the day between 11am – 3pm.

When you buy sunscreen, it should at least have an SPF of 30 to protect against UVB. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2hours, no matter the SPF factor, especially if you have been swimming. SPFs are rated on a scale of 2 up to 50+ based on the level of protection which they offer, with 50+ offering the strongest form of UVB protection.

Avoid using SPFs that are lower than 30, purely due to them not blocking as high percentage of UVB radiation.

  • SPF15 blocks 93% of UVB radiation
  • SPF30 blocks nearly 97% of UVB radiation
  • SPF50 blocks approximately 98% of UVB rays

As stated above, an SPF 30 will block half the radiation that an SPF 15 would let through. If skin cancer is in your history or being sensitive to sunlight, this calls for you to be extra careful.
